Seeing the Landscape: Fall Insights for Entrepreneurs 🍂

As autumn's colors fade and the days get shorter, I'm reminded of how vital it is to step away from our businesses occasionally to gain perspective. Last month, our family hiked with some friends up to Blackrock Summit, a short but rewarding climb in Shenandoah National Park that offers long-range views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. From that higher vantage point, I was struck by how distance changes our view of things. The same is true in business: sometimes we need to step back to see the bigger picture clearly.

I hope you'll find your own moments of pause this season, whether it's a walk in the woods, a peaceful weekend breakfast, or a few minutes of morning meditation. As the year winds down, remember that taking time for reflection and renewal isn't a luxury - it's essential for sustainable success. Taking care of your business means taking care of yourself, too.

That’s why this November newsletter is dedicated to tips and insights that will help both you and your business finish strong in 2024. Thanks for reading, and please be in touch with any comments or questions!

End-of-Year Small Business Essentials

As the year winds down, it's time for more than just holiday celebrations. Taking time now for end-of-year planning helps you spot trends, prevent problems, and start the new year with confidence and clarity. To guide you through this process, here’s a checklist that covers important year-end considerations for your business finances, sales, marketing, staffing, and more.

By setting aside just 1-2 hours per week to tackle the items on this list, you’ll finish the year strong and set your business up for success in the new year. Think of it like a wellness check-up for your business—preventative care that supports both your business's vitality and your own well-being as a business owner.

If you appreciate the work I’ve done to put this list together, drop me a line, or share this newsletter with a friend.

Considering Selling Your Business? Let's Talk

Make Your Year-End Business Giving Count

As business owners, we want to feel that the work we do is meaningful and purposeful, and making donations through your business is a great way to align your professional efforts with your personal values. To deepen the impact of your business giving, plan ahead for Giving Tuesday on December 3rd—with many nonprofits offering donation matching on this day, your gift can have double the impact!

This Giving Tuesday, I'm supporting three organizations that strengthen our local entrepreneurial ecosystem:

The Community Investment Collaborative empowers under-resourced entrepreneurs through education, mentoring, and microloans. Their work creates opportunities for business ownership across our community.

The Central Virginia SBDC provides free business consulting and low-cost training to help local businesses start, grow, and thrive. Their services are a cornerstone of small business success in our region.

The Fountain Fund offers fair-interest loans and financial coaching to formerly incarcerated individuals, helping them build credit, start businesses, and create sustainable futures.

Other organizations that I support include the Rockfish Valley Community Center, the Rockfish Valley Foundation, the Living Earth School, and North Branch School.

What organizations will you support this year? Remember to document your donations and discuss them with your accountant—they may help reduce your taxable income while supporting vital community resources.

Your Year-End Financial Tune-Up

It's time to schedule a year-end meeting with your accountant. This strategic review gives you a chance to understand your tax liability and consider ways to optimize your financial picture before the year is over.

Prepare by sending your accountant a year-to-date P&L, as well as projected incomes and expenses through December 31. Key items to discuss include any outstanding reconciliation questions, your estimated tax scenario, tax planning strategies, anticipated business changes affecting incomes or expenses in the coming year, business mileage and vehicle use, strategic donations, retirement contribution opportunities, and the suitability of your current business structure.

So don’t delay! This meeting can help you improve your tax position, explore business improvements, and make informed decisions that put your business on solid financial footing as you close out the year.
